Puerto Galera’s Night Life

Posted: December 8, 2010 in life, travel

I never thought that the island of Puerto Galera can really be loud and alive at night. Tourists, mostly foreigners of different races like Americans, French and Koreans, flocked in bars and bistros along the beach. Performances were shown here and there. So, after eating dinner, we joined and watched the entertainers own the dance floor. Surprisingly, most of the entertainers are gay. One is really pretty and maybe a transvestite of sort. (S)he really danced and gyrated quite seductively. The other gays made us laugh, while one group was quite provocative and vulgar.

But the highlight of the night was the fire dancing. I was really amazed with the fire dancers, because it was my first to see them perform. Sure, I have seen some of them on TV, but it is different when you actually see them on the flesh. The fire dancers made it seem like they were just playing with the balls of fire. They circled the fire around their bodies, as if they would not burn. Some fire dancers even breathe and eat the fire.

At the back of my mind, I was thinking how the fire dancers risk their lives just to have money to make both ends meet. Even the boatmen and the guides really work hard just to survive and feed their families. I also bow down to the gay entertainers who, for sure, experience ridicule at some point of their performances. These are the mature and interesting topics, aside from prostitution, that my friends and I were talking about while drinking the Mindoro Sling and sitting on the sand along the beach. Hehe.

Mindoro sling is a very popular alcoholic drink on the island. I only took a sip, since I do not drink anymore and I have really annoying allergies, for God’s sake. This cocktail drink tastes like lemon punch. It is citrusy sweet, but it can really knock you off after a few shots. My friends call it traydor. They were the ones who drank the whole pitcher, which we took inside the inn. I could not tell which one of them got really drunk, because the moment I hit the sack, I dozed off immediately. Hehe.

Have you tried weng-weng? Parang ganon. Pero mas matamis. Pero pwede ka mag-order ng mas malakas ang tama, titimplahin nila, kung gusto mo talagang malasing. Hehe.
